Like the rest of the Hill Country, Fredericksburg has no Amtrak service, but Greyhound stops at 758 S Washington. The CVB , in the Market Square at 106 N Adams St (Mon-Fri 8.30am-5pm, Sat 9am-noon & 1-5pm, Sun 1-5pm; ; tel 830/997-6523), has details of the budget hotels along E Main Street; of these, the pool-equipped Sunday House at no. 501 (tel 830/997-4484, ; $100-130) is one of the more luxurious. Bed and breakfast is big business in historic Fredericksburg; contact B&B of Fredericksburg, 619 W Main (tel 830/997-4712, ; $35-160). There's camping in the Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park, three miles southwest on Hwy-16 S, or in the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area.

Restaurants and bakeries line Main Street, many of them doing cheap lunch specials. Dietz Bakery , at no. 218 (tel 830/997-3250), is the oldest in town, good for tasty breads and biscuits. You can eat more substantially at Friedhelm's Bavarian Inn at no. 905 (tel 830/997-6300; closed Mon), which specializes in starchy plates of dumplings and sauerkraut.
