A
service
taxi or bus from Midan el-Gumhorriya in Alex can take you 48km west along the H55 to the coastal town of
ABU SIR
. Unremarkable nowadays, it was once
Taposiris
, a contemporary of ancient Alexandria, built upon the same limestone ridge, and likewise devoted to Osiris-worship.
The enclosure walls of a long-vanished temple crown the ridge, with gate towers offering lovely views over the Mariout marshes and the azure sea. A few hundred metres to the east stands the solitary
Burg al-Arab
(Arab's Tower), actually a Ptolemaic lighthouse replicating the Pharos, but one tenth of its size; it was part of a chain that once illuminated the coastline from Alexandria to Cyrenaica.
