Most of Campo Grande's action happens at weekends, when the
churrascarias
and other large restaurants generally serve their food to the energetic sounds of Paraguayan polkas (
Vitórios
has them weekdays also).
Nightclubs
tend to change quickly, but those currently popular are
Limit
(200m off Av. Afonso Pena by Shopping Campo Grande),
Nix Club
on Avenida Afonso Pena near Rua 25 de Dezembro, and
Mr Dam
at 197 Pajuçara off Avenida Ceará (turn right from Av. Afonso Pena, and it's on the left). All three are well to the east of the city centre, and play a mix of Brazilian, European, Stateside and underground sounds.
The Glauce Rocha
theatre
is out of town, in Cidade Universitária, but often hosts interesting Brazilian works (tel 067/387-3311 for details, or see the local press).
Peña Eme-Ene,
on the corner of Avenida Afonso Pena and Rua Barbosa, is a popular meeting place for artists and musicians, and has live regional music every Thursday night from 8pm - no entrance fee but you're expected to take dinner (tel 067/383-2373; Mon-Wed & Fri 7.30am-6pm, Thurs 7.30am-midnight, Sat noon-6pm).
For a more unusual night out, head for one of Campo Grande's
bingo
halls; recently introduced to Brazil, bingo has proved very popular with young and old alike. The Salas do Bingo are at Av. Mato Grosso 3566 and Rua 14 de Julho 1453.
