Most of Georgetown's
bars
are comfortable places to hang out, but when the fleet arrives, a good many turn into rowdy meat markets, so choose carefully. Usual opening hours are 6pm-2am. In Georgetown's
discos
you're unlikely to hear the latest Western club sounds, and there's usually a cover charge of around RM10.
Babylon Boom Boom
, Lebuh China Ghaut. A fun gay and straight disco and café, whose main attraction is the twice-nightly drag cabaret show.
No name bar
, Lebuh Chulia. Further up from the
Hong Kong Bar
by the bus stop, this basic place always hosts a steady stream of travellers.
Polar Café
, 48a Jl Penang. Family-run sing-along bar with organist and music machine, bright lighting and TV. A hamburger stall operates outside at night.
Rock World
, In a yard off Lebuh Campbell. A spangle of neon, featuring the local Bon Jovis every weekend. Very 80's.
Sol Fun
, Pengkalan Weld. Techno makes it to Penang at this gay disco in a converted warehouse. There's also a nightly "Funky Divas" show.
Tai Wah
, Lebuh Chulia. This daytime café turns into a lively bar in the evening with the cheapest beer in town. The resident Tom Waits impersonator provides musical diversion until the small hours.
20 Lebuh Leith
. This renovated 1930s Straits-style mansion is littered with film memorabilia; it has a large video screen and a beer garden. Slightly pricey, but interesting.
