Apetito , 29-5 Daimyo. Hugely popular bakery-cum-restaurant on Tenjin's Meiji-dori, especially for the excellent-value lunchtime deals. Western food from sandwiches and salads to more substantial fish and meat dishes, all for well under ¥2000. But star attraction is the bread bar - help yourself for an extra ¥200. Daily 8am-11pm.

Capricciosa , 2-6-5 Daimyo (tel 092/716-7701). The well-known Tokyo chain of Italian restaurants has hit Kyushu, offering the same value for money, mammoth portions and queues at peak times. Daily 11.30am-10.30pm.

Food Live , Grand Hyatt Fukuoka , 1-2-82 Sumiyoshi. This basement-floor food court is your best option for somewhere to eat in Canal City, both for atmosphere and value for money. Choose between the appetizing aromas of five open-plan, stylish eating spaces; a moderate meal should cost around ¥2000 per person.

Hard Rock Cafe Fukuoka , 2-2-1 Jigyohama, Chou-ku. Located next to the Fukuoka Dome, the "Rock" offers its formulated dose of Americana along with generous portions of nachos, burgers and ribs starting at around ¥1000. Mon-Fri 11.30am-11pm, Fri & Sat 11.30-3am.

Nanak , 2F, 3-2-1 Maizuru. One of a reliable Indian chain whose lunchtime sets are excellent value. They also do reasonable evening menus, but outside these special deals count on at least ¥2000 per head. Daily 11am-3pm & 5-10pm.

Sizzler , 13F, IMS Building, Tenjin. This large, bright, steak restaurant does a great salad-bar lunch, kids' menus and a decent evening buffet. As well as big, juicy steaks, they serve hamburgers and other variations on the theme. Daily 11am-11pm.

Ume-no-hana , 4F, Canal City. If you can't get to the Dazaifu outlet of this popular tofu restaurant , this is the next best thing. Try the silky-smooth yudofu , cooked in famously pure water from Ureshino onsen. The restaurant is non-smoking. Daily 10am-4pm & 5-11pm.

Uosue , 2-1-30 Daimyo. A small, traditional restaurant famous for having the freshest fish in town. Menus change daily and there aren't any displayed prices, but count on at least ¥2500 for a satisfying evening meal. Even on weekdays it pays to get here before 6pm. Daily 11am-late.
