Whitehorse's airport is on the bluff above the town, 5km west of downtown; taxis are around $9 to the centre, and the Whitehorse Transit Hillcrest bus ($1.25) runs downtown hourly during the day. If you're taking the bus to the airport, pick it up at the Qwanlin Mall at the northern end of 3rd Avenue. The Greyhound bus terminal is at 3211 3rd Ave (tel 667-2223) at the extreme eastern end of downtown, ten-minutes' walk from Main Street - you turn left out of the terminal for the town centre, something it's as well to know if you stagger off the six-times-weekly Greyhound from Dawson Creek, which arrives around 5am. Alaskon Express buses, or Gray Line of Yukon (tel 668-3225) from Fairbanks, Anchorage, Tok and Skagway, also stop here and at the Westmark Whitehorse hotel downtown.

Whitehorse's downtown Yukon Visitor Reception Centre is on 2nd Avenue and Hanson Street (mid-May to Sept daily 8am-8pm; tel 667-2915). Note that the "reception centre" up on the Alaska Hwy still mentioned in some literature is now the Beringia Centre . The Parks Canada information office alongside the SS Klondike (May-Sept daily 9am-6pm; tel 667-4511) is the place to pick up information on the Chilkoot Trail. For information on the Yukon's aboriginal cultures, stop by the office of the Yukon First Nations Tourism Association , 1109-1st Ave (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; tel 667-7698, www.yfnta.org ) and pick up a copy of the Yukon's First Nations Guide .

Almost as useful as these is Mac's Fireweed, 203 Main St (Mon-Sat 9am-9pm, Sun 10am-7pm; tel 668-6104), which has a full range of Yukon books, guides and pamphlets you probably won't find elsewhere. For an outstanding selection of maps visit Jim's Toy and Gifts, 4137 4th Ave (tel 667-2606).

Car rental agencies have desks or courtesy phones at the airport and occasionally a downtown office: Avis, 306 Ray St (tel 667-2847); Budget, 4178 4th Ave (tel 667-6200 or 1-800/268-8900); and Norcan, 213 Range Rd (tel 668-2137) are companies to try, but remember some have restrictions on taking cars on gravel roads if you're thinking of heading north on the Dempster Hwy . For bike rental , contact Big Bear Adventures (tel 633-5642, www.bear.yk.net ). Canoes , paddles and life-jackets plus bikes can be rented from the Kanoe People, Strickland Street and 1st Avenue (tel 668-4899, www.kanoe.yk.net ), who can also set you up with everything you need to paddle to Dawson (700km but lots of people do it): they also organize guided day-trips (from $60) and two-week expeditions on the river.

For exchange , plus reservations for ferries and tickets for local events, contact Thomas Cook, 2101A 2nd Ave (mid-May to early Sept daily 8am-8pm; rest of the year Mon-Fri 8.30am-5.30pm & Sat 10am-5pm; tel 668-2867).
