A welcome sign of Limerick's regeneration is the rate at which good new cafés are appearing. The following list will give you some useful starting points.

Cafés and restaurants

Brûlées Restaurant , 21 Henry St (tel 061/319931) A converted Georgian town house given a crisp, contemporary look. The menu includes such delights as warm rabbit salad to start followed by roast guinea fowl stuffed with goats cheese and fresh herbs. Set dinner menu £25/31.65. Tues-Sat 6.30-10.30pm.

Castle Lane Tavern , off Nicholas Street. Solid bar food is served at this popular pub .

DuCartes Restaurant , The Hunt Museum, Custom House basement, Rutland Street. A stylish spot overlooking the river and extremely popular for its excellent, inexpensive home-cooked lunches, teas and snacks. Opening hours same as museum.

Freddy's Bistro , Theatre Lane (tel 061/418749), down an alley off Lower Glentworth Street. Expensive bistro serving steaks and seafood. Tues-Sun 5.30pm till late.

Furze Bush Café Bistro , corner of Glentworth and Catherine streets. Delightful bistro serving delicious crêpes, sandwiches and salads. Lunch only Mon-Wed, closed Sun.

The Green Onion Café , Rutland St (tel 061/400710). Funky jazz-café/restaurant with an imaginative and reasonably priced menu offering such dishes as Moroccan spiced vegetables with pulses, Italian spicy sausage with tagliatelle, and numerous off-beat sarnie combos. Daily till 10pm.

The Grove , Cecil St. Health-food shop that does good bar-stool lunches and takeaways.

Java's , 5 Catherine St. Little café with bags of atmosphere. Hot lunches, all-day breakfasts plus bagels, baguettes and butties all generously stuffed with tasty homemade fillings. Good value. Mon-Wed 9am-midnight, Thurs-Sat 9am-3am, Sun 11am-midnight.

Kurova Milk Bar , 3 Ellen St. Trendy late-night wine bar offering baguettes, tortillas and sandwiches.

La Romana , 36 O'Connell St (tel 061/314994) Warm, convivial and unpretentious Italian restaurant. The food is moderately priced and a notch better than you might expect from the location. Flavoursome and satisfying Italian standards.

Paul's , 59 O'Connell St (tel 061/316600). Mouthwatering Italian menu going way beyond the usual pizza brief. Main courses from around £8. Lunch only on Mondays, and evenings only at weekends.
