Bourges's main centre for eating is place Gordaine, at the end of rue Coursarlon, off rue Moyenne. The square is attractively medieval, a lovely place to sit and eat in the daytime, despite the continuous piped music: try Lucky Luke , a lively place serving hearty American hamburgers and salads from 45F/¬6.88; or Le Comptoir de Paris , a very popular and friendly restaurant with a terrace overlooking the square (tel 02.48.24.17.16), which serves plats du jour from 59F/¬8.99 with wine and menus from 98F/¬14.94. A short walk from here towards the cathedral, D'Antan Sancerrois , 50 rue Bourbonnoux (tel 02.48.65.96.26; closed Sun & Mon lunch), features local goodies cooked in wine and served in a medieval dining hall (à la carte from 90F/¬13.72); and just next to the food market (Wed-Sat am), at 28-30 rue des Cordeliers, the Palais de la Bière (tel 02.48.70.32.22) has menus for 76F/¬11.59 and 94F/¬14.33, and specializes in seafood. Les Beaux Arts , on place Cujas (tel 02.48.24.00.30; closed Sun) - above the popular and pleasant Le Cujas brasserie (tel 02.48.24.52.67; daily 7am-2am) - also offers seafood and plenty of dishes created to include the local asparagus (menus 79-175F/¬12.04-26.67).

Those with a sweet tooth should head for the excellent pâtisserie Aux Trois Flûtes, on the corner of rues Joyeuse and Bourbonnoux; for chocolates and the local sweet speciality of fourrées au praliné try the imposing Maison Forestines, on place Cujas.
