San Salvador is never going to win any prizes for elegance, and the rough edge to life here can come as a shock to those used to the more tranquil and colonial atmosphere of other Central American cities. There's a singular lack of museums and galleries, and little actually to do other than people-watching and soaking up the unique atmosphere.
El Centro
gives a vivid snapshot of Salvadorean daily life and character, as well as containing some churches and other buildings of interest. Towards the
west
things get easier, with a number of parks, including
Parque Cuscatlán
, providing acres of green relief from the traffic and noise, and the
Paseo General Escalón
and the
Zona Rosa
, offering modern cinemas, bars, clubs, shops and upmarket restaurants. The best museum in the city, commemorating those killed in the years of conflict, is based in the
Universidad de Centroamérica
, in the far southwest.
