TREIS-KARDEN |

From Cochem it's 11km by road or rail to the little double town of
TREIS-KARDEN
. The dominant landmark in Karden, on the north side of the Mosel, is the
Stiftskirche St Kastor
, which was under construction for over three hundred years, marking the full transition from Romanesque to Gothic. Although small, its simple white lines make it one of the most visually appealing churches of the Mosel region. Inside, there's a fine early seventeenth-century side altar of
The Martyrdom of St Stephen
and a slightly faded wall-painting of Christ which looks startlingly modern. Built into the cliffs behind Treis on the south bank of the Mosel are two castles: the restored twelfth-century
Wildburg
, and
Burg Treis
, an eleventh-century ruin.
The
Bahnhof
is in Karden, where the

) can be found at Hauptstr. 27. Most of the
hotels
are also in this part of town: the best are
Brauer
, Moselstr. 26 (tel 0 26 72/12 11; DM100-124/¬50-62), and

, St-Castor-Str. 80 (tel 0 26 72/93 40; DM125-149/¬63-74); both have fine
