Guidebooks used to declare, with some amazement, that Casa had not a single "real" monument. Given the scale and success of the 1930s
Art Deco
landmarks of the city centre - including the ensemble of public buildings on
Place Mohammed V
designed by the French architect d'Henri Prost - this was never quite true. However, the city did undoubtedly lack any one single, great building: a situation that, in part, prompted King Hassan II's decision to construct the
Mosquée Hassan II
on a truly epic scale.
The King first spoke of the Mosque on July 9, 1980 (his birthday and Youth Day) saying: "I wish Casablanca to be endowed with a large, fine building of which it can be proud until the end of time & I want to build this mosque on the water, because God's throne was on the water. Therefore, the faithful who go there to pray, to praise the creator on firm soil, can contemplate God's sky and ocean." Thus the Mosque now stands beside the sea on the road to Aïn Diab - and, if curiosity leads no further in this city, it must be seen - indeed, it cannot be missed
