Inveraray's tourist office is on Front Street (July & Aug daily 9am-6pm; May & June Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 11am-5pm; April, Sept & Oct Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Sun noon-5pm; Feb, March & Nov Mon-Fri 11am-4pm, Sat & Sun noon-4pm; Jan & Dec Mon-Fri 10am-3pm, Sat & Sun 11am-3pm; tel 01499/302063), as is the town's chief hotel , the historic Argyll (tel 01499/302466; £60-70), now part of the Best Western chain. A cheaper, but equally well-appointed alternative is the Georgian Fernpoint Hotel (tel 01499/302170, fernpoint.hotel@virgin.net ; under £40), round by the pier, which has a nice pub garden. The SYHA hostel (tel 01499/302454, ; mid-March to Oct) is in a modern building a short distance north on the A819 Dalmally road. The bar of the central George Hotel is the town's liveliest spot. The best place to sample Loch Fyne's delicious fresh fish and seafood is the superb, moderately priced restaurant of the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar , six miles northeast back up the A83 towards Glasgow.
