Half an hour south by bus,
BHAIRAWA
(officially, the name has been changed to
SIDDHARTHA NAGAR
, but it's not catching on) is a virtual rerun of Butwal. The bazaar, west of the main roundabout on the Siddhartha Highway, supports a sizeable minority of Muslim traders and, like so many border towns, exists primarily to peddle imported goods to acquisitive Indians. Its only recommendation is that it's better than Sonauli.
For
orientation
purposes, think of Bhairawa's three main streets forming an upright triangle: the eastern side is the highway to the border, Bank Street runs along the south, and Narayanpath along the west. The latter two comprise the bazaar. Buses stop on the border highway near the
Hotel Yeti
(a handy landmark), which stands at the southeastern apex of the triangle; rikshas and shared jeeps bound for Sonauli also wait here. The road to Lumbini leaves the border highway about 1km north of the
Hotel Yeti,
just north of the triangle's northern apex.
