BURG AL-ARAB |
 |
Just west of Abu Sir, a minor road runs inland across reedy marshes, passing fragments of an ancient causeway (on the left) that connected Taposiris with the desert. There it meets
BURG AL-ARAB
, a "model" village resembling a walled, medieval Italian town, which was designed by the British administrator Wilfred Jennings-Bramly in 1915. Commandeered as the RAF headquarters during the battle for El-Alamein, Burg al-Arab was later graced with a villa (near the carpet factory outside its walls) where President Sadat planned the October War of 1973. The town is on the B-road from Alex to Mersa Matrouh, with a fair chance of
service
taxis to the nearest small town,
Bahig
(also a train stop).
