SECHURA

The small town of SECHURA , 52km south of Piura, has a quaint seventeenth-century church , on the main square, whose tall twin towers lend the town an air of civilization. Local legend has it that the church was built over an ancient temple, from where an underground tunnel containing hidden treasure led out to the ocean. To the south of the town - between the sea and road - a long line of white crescent dunes , or lomas, reaches into the distance. Local people claim that these were used by Incas as landmarks across the desert.

If you want to stay overnight here you can camp virtually anywhere (including the beach), or stay in a hostal , such as the Hospedaje de Dios ($10-20). There are several restaurants , the best being Don Gilberto's on the main plaza. The town's food market , just off the main square, takes place on weekdays and is good for picnic supplies.
