The industrial town of
BUTTERWORTH
is the port for the island of Penang and its capital, Georgetown, and of no interest except as a transport hub. The
bus station
, port complex, taxi stand and
train station
(tel 04/331 2796) are all next door to each other on the quayside. All but one of the daily north-south trains stop here. The 24-hour passenger and car
ferry service
runs three times an hour from the port complex to Pengkalan Weld in Georgetown and takes twenty minutes. If necessary, you can
stay
near the port at
Sin Tong Ah
(04/323 9679; $15-20). To get there, walk northeast from the bus station along the main road for a minute or so and follow it left past a huge intersection; the hotel is on the other side of the road.
