As with all the larger settlements hereabouts, you're only going to stop in HIGH LEVEL , 199km north of Manning, if you want a place to bed down. Room rates begin to creep up the further north you go, and most of the town's six motels charge around $60. Book ahead, as rooms are often filled with away from home workers. The ritziest are the 75-unit Four Winds Hotel (tel 926-3736, www.4windshotel.com ; $40-60) and the Our Place Apartment Hotel (tel 926-2556; $60-80), which has 20 two-bedroom suites with kitchenettes. Then comes the Stardust Motor Inn (tel 926-4222; $40-60). The best option for campers is to splash out for the private facilities of the 40-site Aspen Ridge Campground (tel 926-4540; $15; April-Oct), 3km south of the centre on the main road (Hwy 35). The tourist office (summer daily 9am-5pm; rest of the year Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; tel 926-4811) is at the southern end of town in the same building as the town's small mus-eum.

Between High Level, the Alberta-NWT Border (191km) and Hay River (NWT), a string of campsites provides the only accommodation , and three aboriginal hamlets - Meander River, Steen River and Indian Cabins - offer only food and petrol.
