ENNISCRONE
, eight miles southwest of Easky, is a popular, rather ramshackle, seaside resort attracting families during the summer months, with caravan sites hidden away in the sand dunes, and an exceptionally good golf course. There's a sweeping three-mile crescent of
sandy beach
with bath houses, built to exploit the health-giving properties of seaweed and hot seawater. The seaweed bathing tradition continues at the wonderful Kilcullen's Bath House (May & June daily 10am-9pm; July & Aug daily 10am-10pm; rest of year Sat & Sun 10am-9pm; tel 096/36238; bath £8/¬10.16, bath and steam £10/¬12.70), a strapping Edwardian establishment where you can experience the slightly strange sensation of lying in fronds of slimy seaweed in an enormous glazed porcelain bath of iodine-rich brown water before finishing off with a cold-water rinse. It is extremely popular, and there is a pleasant
tea room
alongside where you can wait for your soak. A similarly exhilarating way to spend time in Enniscrone is to take to the waves, which you can do at Seventh Wave Surf School down by the beach; here you can take
surfing
lessons (tel 096/49428; £15/¬19.05).
The town is not short of
B&Bs
: try
Central House
on Main Street (tel 096/36234; £33-40/¬41.90-50.79) or one of the several good options down Pier Road, such as
Enniscrone Lodge
(tel 096/36181; £40-55/¬50.79-69.84) or
Gowan Brae
(tel 096/36396; £33-40/¬41.90-50.79). The
Gable End
restaurant
(July & Aug daily; variable opening for the rest of the year; bar food during the day, and dinner 6.30-9.30pm; tel 096/36110) is one of the very best places to
eat
in this part of Sligo, specializing in seafood.
