PALMANOVA

Once ranked as the strongest fortress in all Europe, PALMANOVA is a massive Venetian garrison town built in 1593 in the form of a nine-pointed star, its symmetrical streets converging on a large hexagonal piazza. Guided tours are conducted through the tunnels in the fortifications, and the Civico Museo Storico, at Borgo Udine 4 (daily except Wed 10am-noon & 4-7pm; L5000/¬2.58), fills out the story further. Apart from this military curiosity, there is no reason to visit the town.
