STEINGADEN
, one of many stops on the Romantic Road, can be reached by bus from either Landsberg (this sometimes involves a change at Schongau) or Füssen. The little town is centred on the
Welfenmünster
, the church of a former Premonstratensian monastery. It encompasses virtually the entire history of Bavarian ecclesiastical architecture: the exterior is one of the area's rare Romanesque survivors, the entrance porch and the frescoed Brunnenkapelle in the cloisters are Gothic, the choir stalls are Renaissance, the high altar and decoration of the chancel are Mannerist, while the nave was remodelled in Rococo style to celebrate the monastery's 600th anniversary, with refined stuccowork, a showy pulpit, and an outstanding set of ceiling frescoes of the life of the order's founder, St Norbert, by Johann Georg Bergmüller.
There are three
