JALTENANGO |
 |
Completely unused to visitors, the small town of
JALTENANGO
, jumping-off point for the
Reserva Biosfera El Triunfo
, is just a three-hour bus ride south of Tuxtla. Also known as
Angel Albino Corzo
, it lies at the junction of three rivers and is surrounded by coffee
fincas
on the slopes of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas. The highest peaks of the reserve, a refuge for Chiapas' tropical wildlife, are covered in dense
cloudforest
.
Of the three
hotels
here, the
Hotel Esperanza
(US$10-15), one block east of the plaza, is by far the best; there are also a couple of basic
restaurants
and a bakery. Tracks lead up to the hills, and if you're a wildlife enthusiast you could easily spend a few days exploring the area, though to get the best out of a visit you need to camp and get the help of a local guide.
Buses
leave Tuxtla several times a day from the Cuxtepeques y Anexas station at C 10 Ote and Av 3 Nte, running via Jaltenango to Cuxtepec, high up at the head of a forested valley.
