North of the town of
GUILDFORD
, a thirty-minute drive from Perth, is the
Upper Swan Valley
, WA's oldest wine-growing region. Set at the foot of the Darling Ranges, it makes for a pleasant day's
wine-tasting
, although the wines produced here cannot match the more recent vintages from the Margaret River Region. Guildford itself is a historic town dating back to the earliest years of the colony, with several Federation-era grand hotels to admire and Guildford Village Potters, at 22 Meadow St, acting as the town's
tourist office
(Mon-Fri 10am-3pm, Sat & Sun 10am-4pm; tel 08/9279 9859). If you're heading up the valley, pick up the
Swan Valley Drive - Route 203
guide from here, which details the area's attractions and its dozen or so wineries. And before you leave town (or on your way back), visit the
Halls Museum
, at the back of the
Rose and Crown Hotel
(WA's oldest), at 105 Swan St (Tues-Sun 10am-4.30pm; $4). Proclaiming itself the largest private collection of
diverse memorabilia
in the southern hemisphere, it includes displays of inkwells, corkscrews and evening bags, the like of which you won't find anywhere else.
