HALLS CREEK
, strung out along the highway, has a much livelier appearance than its nearest neighbour, Fitzroy Crossing, 288km to the west. In 1885 WA's first
goldrush
took place in the hills south of town, 17km away, where the mud-brick ruins of the
Old Town
continue to crumble. In less than four years the thousand prospectors succeeded in exhausting the area's potential, before stampeding off to new finds in the Eastern Goldfields.
There's precious little to see in town, but the gold-bearing hills to the southeast offer a few diversions for those with their own transport.
China Wall
is a block-like vein of quartzite looming over a toxic pool, 6km from town, which appears even more impressive from the air.
Caroline Pool
, 15km from town, is a bit muddy for swimming;
Palm Springs
and
Sawtooth Gorge
, a further 30km to the south, are scenically more appealing.
